Data Science

Data science and the increasing impact of big data are contributing important findings to an ever-growing number of disciplines. HKUST has recognized international expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning, optimization/visualization, computer vision, natural language processing, and augmented reality, among others. The University is now leveraging such strengths to attract new faculty team members working on exciting emerging and expanding domains, including big data analytics, bio-informatics, bio-intelligence, text mining, and computational neuroscience, and to inform research across the Schools of Science, Engineering, Business and Management, Humanities and Social Science, and Interdisciplinary Programs Office.

Sustainability

HKUST has pioneered sustainability-related research on regional air pollution, sewage treatment, harbour area treatment, renewables, geotechnical engineering, and urban water supply monitoring systems, encouraging and facilitating new inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary approaches and addressing local, regional and internationally relevant issues. Focal points for the future include novel energy sources and technologies, materials utilization and development, social and policy implications, climate change, carbon cycle, regional and international planning forecasts. HKUST’s sustainability mission also includes transforming the University campus into a “living laboratory” for demonstrating cutting-edge research and sustainable operations as well as experiential learning.

Public Policy

Along with HKUST’s leading international role in science, technology and business management, the University is seeking to extend its impact in Greater China and globally through advancing our public policy research and engagement. The University will pursue additional engagement with policy and decision-makers to assist with solutions to key global challenges, ranging from population aging to terrorism, financial issues to social inequality. This will be achieved through scientifically informed and evidence-based interdisciplinary research, analyses and education programs, and cluster recruitment of faculty who can help to enhance collaboration across Schools and expand the University’s leadership role in this significant sphere.

Systems that operate with varying degrees of independence will play an increasing role in global development in the years to come. Such systems will call for the integration of specialist knowledge and skills of mechanical engineers, computer science experts, and leading sensing and software developers and herald fundamental shifts in employment, data collection, monitoring, city living, and more. With established world-class research in autonomous systems, HKUST is setting out to integrate our innovative exploration of devices, networks, neuroscience and systems through University-wide initiatives that spur impactful discoveries and transformative applications, deliver top Robotics education programs, add to industry collaborations, and contribute to the growth of the regional technology eco-system.
